The Lake
The lake is just steps from the cottage down a gentle slope. In most places the level rock shore opens to the water. Elsewhere along the shore there are low shrubs, grasses and sedges. Pockets of pond lilies and pickerelweed, desirable fish habitat, are close to shore. Evidenced by the remaining shells of fresh water clams on the shore, the muskrats like it here too. Resident fish species are largemouth bass, sun fish and crappie, pike, walleye, perch, and smallmouth bass.
The cottage sits on the east shore of Sheffield Lake near its widest point which is about .4km (1/4 mile). The lake runs north and south for about 5km (3 miles). Currently, boats on the lake are small fishing boats or run-abouts, dinghy style sail boats and pontoon boats.
While the population of Sheffield Lake is primarily seasonal, there a few year round residents. The nearest neighbour is on the north side of the right-of-way road. Further north along a back road are 18 waterfront lots, some of which have buildings. There are 4 cottage properties on the western shore to the south. Immediately across is Crown land. The handful western shore cottages to the north are not visible from this property.
When viewing the photos that follow, imagine a day when the wind is gentle, the sun glints like diamonds on the lake, and you can hear the soft slap, slap of the water on the shore. The phoebe is chirping in the background as are the chipmunks and red squirrels. The dragonflies dart back and forth and the loons on the lake call to one another. Ahhhh.
